Corporation's history dates back to 1906 in the Panhandle of Texas. Headquartered in Dallas, Atmos Energy today serves 3.2 million utility customers in 12 states and approximately 1,000 industrial and municipal customers in 22 states. Regulated utility services are provided to more than 1,500 communities in 12 states. Atmos Energy has grown from 279,000 customers in 1983 mainly by acquiring utility assets. Because of the geographical breadth of operations, the company benefits from diversity in economic conditions, weather patterns, gas supplies and regulatory climates. Atmos Energy currently employs over 250 people here in Amarillo.

In 1997 the Amarillo EDC provided an incentive grant funding to Atmos for the development of a central customer service center in Amarillo. The center occupies 30,000 sq feet, operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and employs 140 full-time employees. Atmos Energy acquired another gas service company in 2001. The increase in customer base resulted in the need for the company to expand at one of two locations. The Amarillo EDC provided a grant for $750,000 which allowed Atmos Energy to expand its current building an additional 12,000 sq. ft to accommodate the additional 75 employees.
