In 2002, the Texas A&M Agricultural Research Center sought to construct three new greenhouses and a fourth attached facility plus repair growth chambers and purchase new instrumentation at a total cost of $255,000. Because of the long history and success of the Research Center, Amarillo has become recognized as one of the premier wheat research areas in the U.S. Crop yield gains directly resulting from A&M research are expected to add $100 million to the Texas High Plains economy within twenty years. With half the cost of the new facilities to be raised from other sources, the Amarillo EDC provided a $127,500 grant to fully fund the cost of construction.
