In 2003 West Texas A&M University requested and received approval from the Higher Education Coordinating Board to establish an undergraduate program in mechanical engineering. Having long supported the creation of a university engineering program to enhance the competitiveness of the Amarillo area and to benefit local employers, the Amarillo EDC provided a $1,040,000 grant to pay for facility improvements, equipment, furnishings, and computer hardware and software for the program.
