Amarillo EDC Business Retention and Expansion Program

While attracting new business and industry to the area is extremely important, the Amarillo EDC recognizes that existing businesses are the lifeblood of our local economy. Existing businesses contribute forty to eighty percent of all new jobs, support our local labor force, and enhance our quality of life. Assisting existing primary business* and industry with growth and expansion plans is therefore an integral part of the Amarillo EDC mission.

The objective of the Amarillo EDC Business Retention & Expansion Program is to provide outreach to Amarillo’s local primary businesses* and support the continued growth and expansion of existing businesses and industry in the Amarillo area through a variety of means: 
The Amarillo EDC believes that actively implementing an on-going Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) program focusing on local primary businesses* will:
  • Improve the business climate of the community
  • Help to make local businesses remain competitive
  • Increase employment
  • Stabilize the local economy
The Amarillo EDC Financial Services division provides financing and consulting services to qualified area businesses in an effort to enhance the local economic environment and encourage development in the region.

*What are Primary Businesses?


A primary business is a for-profit basic-industry business that primarily exports its products or services outside the Amarillo area, thus bringing new money into the local economy. To meet this definition, a company must show that at least 75 percent of the company’s current or projected sales come from outside the Amarillo area and that jobs are or will be located in Potter and/or Randall counties.
