Internships are not only resume-builders for students, but powerful workforce development tools for businesses in Amarillo. By connecting with motivated young professionals early, businesses in Amarillo gain access to fresh talent, unique perspectives, and future leaders.
Programs like Uncover Amarillo: Intern Experience are helping local employers build stronger teams while deepening ties between interns and the Amarillo community. Here’s how internships are making a real impact, and why your business should get involved.
Why Amarillo Businesses Should Invest in Internships:
Grab Talent Early
Internships give employers a front-row seat to future talent. By working with students while they’re still in school, companies can assess cultural fit, teach specific skills, and build relationships that often lead to full-time hires. In fact, 86% of students reported that their internship significantly or moderately impacted their interest in a particular industry (Handshake, Why is an Internship Program Important?). Even if interns don’t join your team long-term, a positive experience increases the chances they’ll speak highly of your business or return later in their career.
Bring in Fresh Perspectives
Today’s interns are tomorrow’s workforce. Gen Z is tech-savvy, socially aware, and eager to make an impact. By inviting them into your workplace, you expose your team to new ideas, updated tools, and creative thinking. Their feedback can spark innovation, help refine your offerings, and give your team a better understanding of younger audiences and emerging trends.
Increase Productivity Across the Board
Interns aren’t just here to observe, they’re here to contribute. Having extra hands on deck allows full-time employees to delegate time-consuming tasks, focus on high-level strategy, and avoid burnout. By giving your full-time employees some extra help, you’re more likely to retain them for longer, too. Whether you’re a growing company or an established employer, an intern can help you accelerate productivity without long-term hiring commitments.
Develop Future Leaders on Your Team
Internships benefit more than the students. Mentoring interns also empowers your full-time staff to strengthen their leadership, communication, and management skills. These micro-leadership opportunities build confidence and prepare employees for more responsibility, all while boosting morale and engagement.
Interns Promote Your Business
Even after the internship ends, the impact can continue. Interns often recommend your company to peers, professors, or future interns. That word-of-mouth network can elevate your brand visibility and attract high-quality talent down the line. If you’re looking to expand your reach on college campuses or among emerging professionals, a strong internship program is one of the best ways to do it.
Amarillo’s Internship Ecosystem: Uncover Amarillo
To help businesses and interns make meaningful connections, the Amarillo Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) created Uncover Amarillo: Intern Experience. This is a summer program designed to showcase the best of Amarillo to young professionals.
Interns in the program get a behind-the-scenes look at Amarillo’s top industries, meet other Amarillo interns from across the country, and explore what it’s like to live and work in the region. For participating companies, it’s a free opportunity to introduce interns to the community and strengthen the local talent pipeline.
2025 Uncover Amarillo Highlights:
- 60+ interns from 12 different cities
- 14 participating employers
- 100% of surveyed interns said the program helped them feel more connected to the Amarillo community
- 75% said the experience made them more interested in living and working in Amarillo
“I had a super good time getting to meet the other interns as well as learn about job opportunities. It was fun learning about others’ experiences and getting to make memories.”— Summer T., Uncover Amarillo Participant
